About the Artist

Robin Austin’s photographic mosaics reflect his love and devotion to storytelling. As the head creative for his own branding firm, Austin deftly told his clients’ stories. Now in his second career, Austin can expand on the stories of some of the twentieth century’s most prominent contributors to a shared cultural heritage: Mick Jagger, the Beatles, Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley, David Bowie, Nelson Mandela, and many others have been immortalized anew.

about the pier

The Naples Pier

Initially constructed in 1889 to service a newly built hotel, the 600-foot pier was used for loading and unloading passengers and freight as there were no roads at the time. The pier remained in use until the hurricane of 1910. The pier was rebuilt, now 100 feet longer, and stood firm until a cigarette fire in 1922.

Repaired again, the hurricane of 1926 severely damaged it, and repairs held firm, even through the 1935 Labor Day hurricane, until the hurricane of 1944. The repeated damage brought on new building standards for the pier to be rebuilt with.

In 1960 Hurricane Donna decimated the pier and the hotel, the hotel never reopened, but the pier came back – as the icon of Naples that it had always been. Through donations and tax support, the Naples Pier has and will forever remain the iconic heart of Naples.
